In Brief

Rangers on the brink of qualification. Were able to rotate their squad at the weekend. Katic and Jack out. Doubts over Barker. Helander self isolating.

Looking Back

Rangers closing in on qualification to the knockout stages after a draw with Benfica, though having led the Portuguese side 2-0, they should have closed the game out.

Have picked up eight points from their four European matches to date, including a 2-0 win over Standard Liege around six weeks ago.

Everything going smoothly domestically. Have won 13 of their first 15 league matches of the season, and on Sunday had the luxury of playing with a reserve team against Falkirk in the League Cup, a match they won 4-0.

Looking Ahead

No fans permitted.

Brandon Barker picked up an issue on Sunday that saw him withdrawn. If he misses the game, it will not be a blow of any significant note.

All key players will be restored to the starting XI for this match. Victory would allow them to relax next weekend and focus on the league to some extent.

Nikola Katic remains the chief point of concern. Ryan Jack is again missing while Filip Helander is self isolating after testing positive for Covid-19.

Jordan Jones and George Edmundson will be left out for internal disciplinary reasons.

Standard Liege

In Brief

Cimirot is out and Amallah is missing. Vanhuesden and Muleka out. Oulare banned.

Looking Back

Finally secured first points in the group stages after bagging a last-minute 2:1 home win over Lech Poznan last week. It seemed for a while like Standard were heading for a fourth group loss in a row but they battled back in the second half, getting a last-minute winner, and remain theoretically with a chance of progressing.

Played a compact and disciplined game away at Anderlecht to earn a share of the spoils in a 0:0 draw. It was not a game to be remembered fondly but the team worked well as a unit and kept a rare clean sheet of late.

Looking Ahead

Heading to Scotland for a tough game against a very strong Rangers side as Philip Montanier urges his men to give it a real go and try to upstage the Scottish league leaders. Standard will be up against it and will need to show more in the final third.

The squad is looking quite settled after all the drama with positive COVID-19 players a month ago. Mehdi Carcela was the last to contract the virus but is already back, having already played for the reserves on Monday while Selim Amallah is carrying an injury and is out again.

Obbi Oulare will miss out after being sent off in the game against Lech last week. Gojko Cimirot is a fresh absentee due to a foot injury. Zinho Vanhuesden is out for the long term and Jackson Muleka is also ruled out.

Manager Comments

Montanier: "We came here to get a positive result so I don’t think who we’ll play defensively. We will do everything to deliver a good match, then we will see how it goes. We have a bit of revenge to take for the first game. Here, it will be necessary to produce more, to increase the efforts and to be fairer in almost all areas: technical, offensive and defensive."
