Charlton will face Sunderland in the play-off final after claiming a penalty shoot-out win over Doncaster. The Addics let a 2:0 aggregate lead slip and even trailed at a point, but the game ended 4:4 on aggregate after extra-time. The Rovers missed their final two spot-kicks, therefore losing the shootout and having their campaign ended in the cruelest way imaginable.
The Addics looked to be heading for Wembley when Krystian Bielik opened the scoring only two minutes in, but Tommy Rowe rifled from range to level for the visitors nine minutes later.
The game descended into being a scrappy affair following the two early goals but the visitors, still needing a goal to go through, were having the better of things.
However, there was not much in terms of clear-cut chances and the Rovers looked set to be denied, but managed to take the goal to extra time thanks to a late goal by Andy Butler, who headed home a corner.
Charlton started the extra-time better and had two chances, but were unlocked on the break, as John Marquis headed the visitors ahead after a counter-attack.
The hosts leveled from their very next attack, as a spill by Marco Marosi allowed Darren Pratley to bundle into an empty net.
Neither side was willing to take too many risks after the goal and the game went to penalties. Marquis and Rowe missed the visitors' final two spot-kicks, as the Addics booked a Wembley place.
It was the first time since October that the Addics conceded more than a single goal at home. They managed to just get over the line despite not being at their best and now face an all-or-nothing game against Sunderland. On the other side, it was a bitterly disappointing way for the Rovers to have their season ended but they can hold their hands high and be pleased with the campaign they have had.
