Lille had made quite a bright start to the match but fell behind when Mauro Icardi pounced from close range with PSG’s first big chance. Before the break, the hosts had added a second via Angel Di Maria. Both teams were wasteful in the second half as there was no further scoring.
Despite suffering from a number of absentees, Lille made a bright start to the match, with Xeka’s early shot forcing a good save from Keylor Navas. While Lille had several decent sights of goal in the first half, this was their best.
Neymar was given a start by PSG but was largely ineffective. Just back from injury, he appeared rusty and was far from his best.
Di Maria was once again the home side’s key trigger. He had a big role to play in both goals while he was their chief architect in the second half, setting up huge chances for Edinson Cavani and Julian Draxler.
If PSG lost their efficiency after the break, their troubles in front of goal were matched by Lille, who passed up a couple of big opportunities. Loic Remy missed the best of these as Renato Sanches made a promising cameo.
PSG largely looked in control, with Thiago Silva excellent in the heart of their defence, snuffing out danger before it had an opportunity to develop.
PSG were full value for their win but Lille were once again inefficient against a big team. While they are consistently competitive against such sides, they are just as consistently wasteful.
