Game Report

Highlights

West Brom failed to return to the top of the table as they were denied a seventh straight win by Wigan. Sam Johnstone's own goal put the struggling Latics ahead before Charlie Austin levelled for Albion who are now goal difference behind Leeds. Wigan remain in the bottom three.

Detail

Wigan made an astonishing seven changes with Jamie Jones coming in for the injured David Marshall in goal and an injury crisis at the back meaning Kal Naismith was at centre back. West Brom surprisingly rested Grady Diangana and Matheus Pereira.

Wigan were very impressive in the first half and Johnstone had to have an impressive game in goal for West Brom to keep the scores level.

The hosts then deservedly took the lead as Sam Morsy's long ranger was saved onto the post by Johnstone only for the ball to hit the West Brom keeper and go in. Wigan then hit the woodwork again through Michael Jacobs.

But West Brom, who really lacked fluency after their changes, did at least rescue a point as Jamie Jones was punished for picking up a back pass, Austin beating 10 men on the line with the free kick from six yards.

Summary

Not West Brom's best performance and now Slaven Bilic may rue resting his exciting players. Wigan showed character but are now nine games without a victory.
