For the first time since 2002, there were no goals in El Clasico. Real Madrid, who were the better side, did have the ball in the back of the net in the second half, but it was ruled out for offside and it finished scoreless.
Real Madrid were the far superior team in the first half. They had Barcelona pinned back and the pressing work done by Isco caused Barcelona lots of problems.
The chances created by Real Madrid were largely long-range shots - which were off target or which Marc-Andre ter Stegen saved - and set-piece chances. At a couple of set pieces, Raphael Varane had two penalty claims, but neither was given.
Before the half, both sides had made one goalline clearance each, with Gerard Pique saving Barcelona and Sergio Ramos saving Real Madrid at one of Barcelona's rare moments of attack.
Real Madrid started the second half well too, but Barcelona introduced Arturo Vidal and were better from that point on.
Both sides had chances to win it in the second half, the closest being a Gareth Bale offside goal that was ruled out for a Ferland Mendy offside in the build-up.
Both coaches introduced their young attacking wildcard in the final minutes, Ansu Fati for Barcelona and Rodrygo for Real Madrid. But as the final whistle approached both sides seemed to be settling for a draw.
Real Madrid will feel they deserved to win this. They were the far better team in the first half and probably should have had a penalty or two, before a more even second half.
