Everton came from behind twice to earn a point against Liverpool in a controversial Merseyside derby. Dominic Calvert-Lewin's late header made it 2-2 but Jordan Henderson was denied a last-gasp winner by VAR.
Very purposeful start by the champions rewarded with an early goal. A flowing move ended with Andy Robertson getting past Seamus Coleman down the left and crossing for Sadio Mané to finish.
Everton struggled to deal with the visitors early on. Jordan Pickford fortunate to get away with a poor tackle on Virgil van Dijk in the box - thanks to a marginal offside against the Dutchman who then hobbled off injured.
The hosts grew into the game and got back on terms from a set-piece. Adrian conceded the corner with an awkward save on Calvert-Lewin's strike and then allowed Michael Keane's header to go straight through him
Thiago Alcantara ran the game at times for Liverpool in midfield but James Rodriguez matched him for quality on the ball. The Colombian put in a great cross for Richarlison who headed against the post.
A mistake at the back and a ruthless finish saw the visitors regain the lead. Yerry Mina's meek clearance on Jordan Henderson's cross fell straight to Mohamed Salah who rifled it in first time.
Everton played more to the strengths of Calvert-Lewin in the second half and it eventually brought them a reward. The big striker dominated Robertson aerially to head in Lucas Digne's hoisted cross.
The Toffees forced to hold on with ten men for the final few minutes. Richarlison's reckless tackle on Thiago brought him a straight red card.
Pickford had a typically erratic game - making a few fine saves but almost costing his side right at the end. He allowed Jordan Henderson's shot to squirm past him but was relieved when VAR ruled the goal out for another fractional offside.
Relief in the end for Everton who were outplayed at times but showed the resilience and character to respond - maintaining their unbeaten start. Liverpool aggrieved with some of the decisions but also disappointed to surrender two leads.
