Curtis Jones took advantage of a terrible Andre Onana howler on the hour mark to open the scoring for Liverpool and give them a 1-0 victory over Ajax who squandered several clear chances to net one of their own both before and after conceding.

Liverpool were without several starters due to injuries in this game that was played behind closed doors. To make things worse, Alisson Becker suffered a knock before the game and was replaced by youngster Caoimhin Kelleher who, thankfully for the Reds, produced an extraordinary performance between the goals.

Liverpool were the better side before the break and came close to scoring in the first part when Jones' effort crashed against the post.

Ajax made several mistakes in the build-up in the first 45 minutes but grew into the game and squandered a couple of big chances to open the scoring, with David Neres hitting the post after the break.

Jones took advantage of a huge Onana mistake to score his first ever Champions League goal and give Liveprool the lead just before the hour mark.

From that point on, it was the two goalkeepers who were the central characters of the game. Onana brilliantly denied Roberto Firmino to give Ajax the chance to push for a point here, but Kelleher saved a Klaas-Jan Huntelaar header late into the game to clinch the victory for the Reds.

Hard-fought victory for Liverpool who benefited from Onana's mistake. Ajax could and should have scored at least one goal and may have deserved one or even three points here, looking dangerous in attack after the break.
