Premier League Player of the Week: Tammy Abraham
17.09.2019 08:48:03- The young Chelsea striker scored a hat-trick against Wolves
- He now has seven goals in three games
- With seven aerial duels won, he contributed to the win in other ways too
Frank Lampard’s young Chelsea side faced a tricky trip to Wolves over the weekend, but they returned to London with three points thanks in large part to a wonderful performance from Tammy Abraham. The 21-year-old striker became the youngest Chelsea player to ever score a Premier League hat-trick as he followed up Fikayo Tomori’s spectacular opener with three well-taken goals of his own. Abraham even netted an unfortunate own goal on the way to a 5-2 final score. He was certainly involved.
His three goals would probably be enough to make him the Premier League player of the weekend on their own, but it’s his overall contribution that makes Abraham the far and away standout performer of matchday five. Lampard wanted the youngster to lead the line and Abraham could hardly have done a better job, winning seven aerial duels throughout the 90 minutes.
Aerial duels won in Wolves vs Chelsea
1. Tammy Abraham: 7
2. Marcos Alonso: 4
2. Andreas Christensen: 4
2. Jesús Vallejo: 4
It was with his head that he scored his second, while the first goal also came from a cross into the box, but the third goal was almost a pure individual effort. After receiving a long ball forward from Jorginho, Abraham muscled and jinked his way past Conor Coady before firing past Rui Patrício.
That completed his hat-trick and made him just the third player aged 21 or younger to have scored at least two goals in three consecutive appearances in Premier League history, with Cristiano Ronaldo and Dele Alli being the others. That’s because Abraham had scored a brace in the recent matches against Norwich City and Sheffield United too, propelling him into the Premier League top scorer race.
Top scorers in the 2019/20 Premier League
1. Tammy Abraham: 7 goals
1. Sergio Agüero: 7 goals
3. Teemu Pukki: 6 goals
4. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang: 5 goals
4. Raheem Sterling: 5 goals
There is a long way to go in the season and it will be almost impossible for Abraham to keep up this kind of scoring pace, but he and his coach are certainly happy with the recent displays and with the hat-trick performance at Molineux.
"Tammy is looking the part and that's work, having gone out on loan and scoring a lot of goals in the Championship, having a year in the Premier League and now I think he feels the responsibility of the Chelsea shirt as he should,” Lampard said after the weekend’s win. “The last three games speak for themselves.”
