Football Season Review

№17: Leganes

Leganes once again avoided relegation, which was the target they set out at the beginning of the season. Overall, this season was a good one for Leganes. They have one of the weaker squads of the division, yet their coach Asier Garitano was able to put together a solid 4-2-3-1 system which focussed on defending, but which also generated enough chances at the other end for Leganes to pinch enough points to stay up. Although Leganes were poor away from home and collected just 12 points on the road all season, their home form was good enough for them to consistently pick up points and they never once fell inside the bottom three. They always seemed like they could comfortably avoid relegation, helped by the fact they started well and won five of their first nine matches, and that enabled them to take the Copa del Rey seriously and to embark on a run to the semi-finals, defeating Real Madrid on away goals en route. The style of football was never all that great and Leganes scored the third fewest goals in the division, averaging less than a goal per game, but 17th must be considered an overachievement for such a small club with such limited resources. The dilemma now for Leganes is the fact that Asier Garitano is stepping down as coach. They’re likely to have a similarly modest squad next season, so they’ll need to find and hire a coach who can also make Leganes more than the sum of their parts.
