Bologna overcame the loss of several key players to once again comfortably finish above the relegation zone. The summer saw the departure of veteran goalscorer Marco Di Vaio, whilst player of the season Gaston Ramirez and goalkeeper Jean-Francois Gillet were also big losses in the transfer market. The club took something of a gamble by signing misfiring striker Alberto Gilardino. The veteran had been less than prolific last season so the younger Manolo Gabbiadini was also brought in to help lighten the load in attack. However, Alessandro Diamanti was the one who continually made Bologna tick. He can often be erratic at times but Ramirez's departure gave him more responsibility as the sole creative hub in the team and he excelled in that role. His dribbling ability, long range shooting and proficiency from set-pieces were highlights for the Rossoblu. His guile playing in the hole helped Gilardino to flourish as the veteran striker was able to notch a very respectable number of goals whilst Gabbiadini also showed glimpses of his potential. Indeed, on their day, Bologna were a very potent attacking force as illustrated by some amazing high scoring results including two shock 3-2 away wins at both Roma and Napoli over the course of the season. However, those games also illustrated their shortcomings as they weren't nearly diligent enough in defence. However, Stefano Pioli seemed to be able to coax a result or two out of his side just when they needed it and they were always able to keep a fairly safe distance from the relegation zone. The manager has long been touted for a bigger job so the club will have to do their utmost to keep him on board as well as some of the key players. Diamanti is already attracting attention from the likes of Juventus but he is key to everything Bologna do. They'll hope he realises this is the perfect place for him to prosper as the club will look to progress next season.
