At the end of a troubled campaign, where everything actually went wrong, Chambly suffered their first relegation ever, returning to the Championnat National after only 2 seasons in Ligue 2.
It was evident right from the start that it was not going to be an easy season for coach Luzi’s team, as they immediately lost Petkovic, the gem of their transfer campaign, because of a long-lasting injury. His goals were desperately needed, if we consider that Chambly scored only 9 in the initial 12 weeks.
Having won only once between August and late November, in week 5 against fellow relegated Chateauroux, they found themselves at the bottom of the table but never lost a fighting attitude. Between weeks 13 and 22 they managed to straighten up the ship and to get out of the danger zone, obtaining 4 wins while losing 3, despite a squad plagued by injuries and Covid outbreaks.
The defence, pride and joy of their previous campaign, was the department most heavily affected by problems, with Gonzalez, Jaques and Dequaire, the designated starters, all missing huge chunks of the season.
The crisis reached its peak between weeks 23 and 29, when they collected just 1 point, losing 6 times, and fell to the 19th place, where they would never escape.
However, 4 wins from the following 8 kept Chambly's hopes of a play-off finish alive, despite having to recall Planté from retirement due to a shortage of goalkeepers. But the final hurdle proved just too much as a 0-3 defeat in Paris killed their survival dreams off.
With the worst defence of the Ligue, whereas they were leaders in clean sheets in the previous season, and one of the poorest away sides, Chambly simply could not cope with the number of problems faced during the campaign and relegation was just a logical consequence.
Correa was the sole player to play in almost every game, he provided 9 goals, but was too inconsistent, while Petkovic, Guezoui and Heinry could not contribute enough.
Given the actual quality in the squad, they could fight for an immediate return to Ligue 2.
