A poor season for Tricolores that was somewhat predictable. Flu’s financial problems of late and poor regional cup performances let the fans knowing already what to expect for Série A, this year.
Fernando Diniz’ audacious tactics failed to do any good to Flu, as somehow it didn’t suit the players on the squad. A memorable comeback against Grêmio (5-4) and a smashing 4-1 win over Cruzeiro were examples of the attacking potential, but unfortunately exceptions to a struggling start.
Diniz was sacked at round 15, but his replacement Oswaldo de Oliveira wasn’t able to make any impact. In fact, his period was even worse, and he was out too after only 6 games. Problems with important players and the supporters were also causes for the quick breakup.
Man of the house Marcão picked the team on a very dangerous situation (shared points with Cruzeiro and CSA in 17th and 18th position) and quickly brought the historical Carioca team to a safe place, ending 10 points above the red line and restoring a bit of the lost pride to the fans.
Some long and important injuries, especially at the back (Muriel, Rodolfo, Ferraz, Mascarenhas, Allan, Airton), the embarrassing poor form of PH Ganso and the departure of key striker Pedro were massive problems for an already short squad to deal with.
The fans are not safe from suffering again next season. Daniel and João Pedro will leave, Yony should also go away, and a few important players will also be hard to keep. Flu’s serious short of money will make it hard to replace them and build a good squad for new coach Odair Hellmann to work with.
