Lazio ended the season four places higher and 19 points better off than the previous campaign - finishing level on points with 3rd place Atalanta and returning the club to the promise land of the Champions League. However, there's still a lingering sense of disappointment in the capital over what might have been.
After a shaky start to their Serie A campaign where they won just 3 of their opening 8 games - something suddenly clicked with the Biancocelesti in the league. They set new club records by winning 11 Serie A matches in a row at one point and going unbeaten in 21 league games (W17 D4). That run saw them move to within a point of Juventus at the top of the table but then the Coronavirus pandemic struck.....
If any team in Italy was affected most by the lockdown period - it was Lazio. They suffered with injuries and a lack of fitness - their first game back saw them surrender a two goal lead at Atalanta to lose 3-2. They ended up losing half of their remaining 12 games of the season after the restart.
A limp ending to the season doesn't take away from some other memorable achievements. As well as the aforementioned club records - Ciro Immobile tied Gonzalo Higuain's all time record with 36 Serie A goals in a truly stellar campaign to finish as Capocannoniere. Luis Alberto also bagged a superb 15 assists and was back to his best along with Sergej Milinkovic-Savic in midfield. Francesco Acerbi was a rock at the back in what ended up being the second best defence in Italy behind only Inter.
Simone Inzaghi was also able to deliver another trophy to the capital club - triumphing over Juventus in the Italian Super Cup.
Lazio are back among Europe's elite next season but Inzaghi will need to be backed in the transfer market. His squad was woefully exposed towards the end of the season and they were also found out early on in the Europa League - losing 4 of their 6 group games to crash out. If the club's hierarchy want to take the next step and challenge for major honours, they need to bolster the squad.
