Football Season Review

№9: Western Sydney Wanderers

Wanderers missed out on the play-offs by just 4 points in the end of what was very inconsistent campaign. The 2 early wins against Sydney FC showed that on a good day Wanderers can beat anyone, the problem was that the level of performance never stayed consistent. It all looked great after 4 rounds (W3 D1) but then Wanderers lost 8 of their next 10 league games and come mid-January coach Babbel was sacked. Under his replacement De Marigny the results improved again (W5 D4 L3), but the damage was done and despite making valiant effort Wanderers missed out on the play-offs. Undoubtedly captain Duke was the true leader of the team and his goals were constant source of joy and points. His efforts were well supported by Muller for most of the season, but defensively Wanderers looked very shaky. None of Ziegler, Georgievsky or Jurman played at the level expected from them and many individual errors from all of them brought many disappointing results too. De Marigny definitely made the team better since taking charge and it seems most of the main players really like him. After 3 consecutive years without play-off football Wanderers are desperate to do better next season, but their chances will depend a lot on who will stay in the squad and what new signings will be made. Right now Wanderers lack quality in many areas and they need to be busy on the transfer market.
