Football Season Guide

Cambridge United enjoyed a pretty decent season last year despite never really threatening to get into the play-off mix once they hit a poor run of form in January. The U's were the third most consistent and solid team in the league for the first half of the season but their solid defence just crumbled in the wake of injuries and loss of form and the rest of the season fizzled out. Still, Jez George did a really good job on his first full season with the U's and will now aim to improve them further. Their major signing of the summer is Robbie Willmott who returns to his boyhood club after 18 months at Luton. Billy Gibson also looks a shrewd addition in midfield having done well at Braintree on loan last season. Overall, the main worry is the lack of real cover at the back despite the signing of Scott Garner. Also, Michael Gash did as well as he can up front last season but he cannot be relied on too much and new signing Tom Elliott could provide more muscular presence up there. Overall, the U's have a decent squad and some good players all over the park but one feels that there is a lack of real genuine quality to make the difference at this level and a place in the top ten ought to be the target again.
