Grenoble spent much of last season in the playoff positions to go up but tailed off terribly in the second half of the season and even briefly flirted with relegation so poor was their team. Head coach Vincent Hognon was replaced towards the end of the campaign, with Laurent Peyrelade stepping in. He had little immediate impact last term but will hope that pre-season has allowed him to suitably install a new, less defensive style of play to a team that was often very negative under their previous boss. Given the new manager and philosophy that Grenoble will play with, there has surprisingly been little movement in the squad – particularly in terms of signings. Bamba Sanyang has been moved on after an erratic spell at the club, while striker Virigliu Postolachi has departed after a disappointing campaign. Pape Meissa Ba is now the only recognised centre-forward, although Alan Kerouedan, an old ally of Peyrelade at Rodez, has joined the club and is well capable at this level. Similarly, look for left winger Amine Sbai to have more of an impact this season. The only change in midfield is the retirement of Manuel Perez, who barely played last season, leaving Grenoble with a solid core of players, albeit one that can lack excitement. Jessy Benet’s injury last season was key to the club’s downfall, with the 29-year-old their spark in this area. He will again be utterly key in an attacking sense. Similarly, not much has changed in defence beyond the departure of experienced centre-back Adrien Monfray, who has joined Troyes. The players in the rearguard are liable to be asked more questions this season, but the return of Allan Tchaptchet to full fitness will help in this regard. Nevertheless, a lack of depth in the wide areas could be an issue. Goalkeeper Brice Maubleu remains an excellent option at this standard.
