Union Berlin went through their worst campaign since gaining promotion to the Bundesliga and just about scraped through to survival as an injury time winner on the final day of the season helped seal a 2-1 win that saw them finish above Bochum thanks to a superior goal difference. Injuries played a big role in their dismal campaign last season with just two outfield players making more than 25 starts in the league. Berlin twice sacked their coaches over the course of last season before announcing former Mainz coach Bo Svensson as their permanent replacement ahead of the new season. Berlin have managed to hold on to majority of their squad from last season though Knoche has left on a free transfer. Leweling and Thorsby were out on loan last season which have been converted into permanent moves while Laidouni, Kaufmann and Busk have also left the club. In terms of arrivals, Berlin have brought in Tom Rothe and Leopold Querfeld to boost their options in the defense while Laszlo Benes is another decent acquisition that will improve the midfield. Berlin did complete Alex Kral's signing on a free transfer but the midfielder has since been sent out on loan to Espanyol despite being a decent option from the bench last season. From Champions League qualification to a relegation scrap was a big fall for Berlin last season and while Svensson had a mixed time at Mainz, the club will be confident that he is the right name to help them steer well clear of the relegation zone and push for a place in the top half this time around.

Target

Berlin had qualified for Europe in their three previous seasons but having just managed to secure survival last time around, a comfortable mid-table finish in the least expected out of Svensson this season
