Dortmund were disappointing domestically last season after coming within touching distance of the title the previous campaign. The Black and Yellows had fallen way off the pace by the new year, that attention soon turned to chasing success in Europe. Eden Terzic’s side excelled in the Champions League, but missed out on the big prize after losing to Real Madrid in the final. Terzic has since stepped down as head coach, having taken the club as far as he can. Assistant Nuri Sahin has taken on the role as new boss and it will be interesting to see what he can bring. The Turk has only managed Antalyaspor before, so is still fairly inexperienced, however, he knows what it takes to win, having starred in the Dortmund team that last won a league title back in 2012. On the pitch things have changed too. Club legend’s Reus and Hummels' time in the famous black and yellow has come to an end, so fresh blood was needed. The new signings that have been made so far suggest that Dortmund are ready to close the gap on their rivals. Niclas Fullkrug also left for West Ham but the arrivals in attack should make up for it. Serhou Guirassy has joined from Stuttgart after a campaign which saw him come only second to Harry Kane in the scoring charts. A deadly target-man on his day, but keeping him fit for the whole season will be a challenge. The ever-improving Maximilian Beier has also joined after a breakthrough season with Hoffenheim, his performances eventually earned him a call-up to the German national squad. The defence has also been strengthened with Waldemar Anton a leading figure at centre-back and Brazilian Couto a good loan signing from Manchester City at right-back. Pascal Groß will also bring a cool head and experience to the midfield. Dortmund look a lot stronger in most areas but the left side could be a weakness if further additions are not sought. Full-back Maatsen and winger Sancho have both returned to their parent-clubs after successful loan spells.

Target

The standard among the front-runners in the league has increased over the past year so Dortmund have some catching up to do. There will be an expectation for the club to be amongst the challengers for the title, but whether it will be enough this time around, remains to be seen.
