Football Season Review

№17: Atalanta

It was a season of transition at Atalanta as they struggled to hit the heights that almost saw them achieve a top half finish in the last campaign. Their start was pretty dreadful as they lost half of their opening twelve games and were struggling to put the ball in the back of the net. German Denis, the man who they'd relied on so heavily for goals the past few seasons went through a terrible dry patch and didn't find the net in Serie A until October. In fairness to the Argentine, he did end the season well as the January loan arrival of Mauricio Pinilla certainly helped lighten the load for him in attack. In fact, the Chilean was a breath of fresh air and scored some spectacular goals during the second half of the season. Maxi Moralez wasn't always a permanent fixture in the side but he ended up with the best statistics as he bagged five goals and six assists from midfield. Other than that, there were very few positives for Atalanta from this season. Only the bottom two teams won less games than them. They scored few and conceded plenty. It all led to the eventual dismissal of long time manager and fan favourite Stefano Colantuono, who'd led the club to this level and managed to consolidate them in the top flight. However, perhaps he'd taken them as far as they could go and his replacement, Edy Reja, seemed quite a coup considering some of the bigger jobs he's had. The former Lazio manager failed to turn up any trees in the final few weeks of the season but he did just about enough to keep the club afloat, although they were helped by the poor form of the teams below them. It will be intriguing to see if he can put his own imprint on the side next term after he's afforded his first summer transfer window.
