Football Season Review

№14: Chievo Verona

It was a similar story again this season for Chievo who continue to employ their miserly but effective tactics to achieve comfortable safety year after year. They scored the fewest goals in the whole of Serie A this season yet still managed to finish comfortably in mid-table thanks mostly to their excellent defence and their ability to seemingly always pick up a result when they need one. It wasn't all plain sailing for the Flying Donkeys as a string of early season defeats saw Eugenio Corini dismissed as manager. His replacement was Rolando Maran and the former Catania coach didn't try to change the club's philosophy with any maverick tactics. He stuck to the same principles which have brought Chievo stability in the top flight over the past few seasons. Incredibly, only the top three in Serie A conceded fewer goals than the Gialloblu this campaign. It's hard to choose a player of the season for the club as the back-four all worked so together as a unit as did the whole team. Alberto Paloschi may steal the plaudits as he managed a hot streak of goals towards the end of the season which helped secure their safety. A team can defend all they like but if, they don't put the ball in the net, they're in trouble but it's unlikely Chievo's philosophy or goals (no pun intended) will change much as it's brought them a seventh straight season in the top flight.

Player of the Season: Alberto Paloschi
