Football Season Review

№6: Bray Wanderers

Bray are coming from a season that will leave their fans dreaming of what might have been, as their side started superbly but failed to live up to their early promise, with off-field problems more than likely being the main reason for this. The Wanderers, who entered the season with a scoring record bettered only by Dundalk and Cork, were playing some truly exception football early in the season and won seven of their opening ten games and would have surely finished inside the European places had they managed to maintain that level of play. However, things started to turn sour for the Wanderers following their bright start. They went on a run of eight games in which they managed to win only once and, somewhere in the middle of that run, news broke that they were badly struggling financially and that there was a huge question mark regarding whether they would go out of business. Local media were dissecting the situation surrounding the club on a weekly basis, while the situation culminated in early June, when the players posted a joint statement, making themselves all available for transfer. The Wanderers eventually managed to, at least temporarily, solve their financial issues - the players started to receive payments again and assurances were made that the club would not go out of business, but damage has been done by then, as they were way behind in the race for European places. Harry Kenny has announced that he would leave the club at the end of the season with three games to go. Given that the club's current financial state is unclear, the Wanderers go into the winter break with a big fair of mystery surrounding them.
