Cambridge finish the season in the top-ten and the season should be considered a success given that the U's just managed to beat the drop 12 months. The expectations were set low for the Amber Army at the start of the season due to little budget for signings and a small squad but a late draw away at Wrexham on the first day of the season set the tone for a very promising first few months of the campaign. The team really reached higher levels of performance in September when they kept five clean sheets in seven games and were doing well to take their chances and get valuable points from games in which they were second best. Jez George did a good job of constructing a side based on solid defence and efficiency and they earned the reputation of being one of the toughest teams to beat in this first half of the season. Indeed, they suffered just one league defeat from August to December in a run of 19 games. They were really putting their hat in the play-off race at this stage but a really poor run in the first couple of months of 2012 ended their challenge. Seven defeats in ten games brought the curtains down on their play-off charge with injuries taking their toll and confidence tumbling down after the first poor results. George tried to rescue the season with a number of loan signings but the team never really managed to recapture the good performances of earlier despite losing only one of their last eight games. Still, it was a positive campaign all round for the U's who will need to build on it and try to go closer next season.
