Football Season Review

It was a wonderful season for Hull City, who were crowned Champions as they bounced back at the first attempt. An 8-0 thrashing at crisis club Wigan Athletic was last summer’s nadir and relegation left big scars that took time to heel. Grant McCann was clearly wounded by the experience and his character in sticking around was crucial as the Tigers roared back. He built his team around midfield playmaker George Honeyman, with the summer additions of Greg Docherty and Richard Smallwood anchored around him. A 4-3-3 formation saw Josh Magennis lead the line with Mallik Wilks and loanee Hakeeb Adelukan on either side of him They were handily place going into the January transfer window but lost Adelukan, who was recalled by parent club Bristol City. A contract dispute with Keane Lewis-Potter was settled and he more than filled Adelukan’s boots. A remarkable run of form from February saw the side go on a 14-match unbeaten run, leaving their promotion challengers in their wake as they claimed the title. It was a breakthrough season for Jacob Greaves, who established a central-defensive partnership with Reece Burke, whilst Matt Ingram made the goalkeeper’s jersey his own. Honeyman was the standout performer however and will be looking forward to taking on the Championship next season. McCann is in an enviable position with none of the first XI likely to leave this summer. If he can make some clever additions to his squad, they should have no worries about relegation.
