Football Season Review

№10: Gillingham

Gillingham’s season ended in disappointment as they weren’t able to achieve a play-off place. It was their early season form that ultimately cost them, they suffered five straight defeats in October and five losses in six games in December. Results picked up in the early part of 2021. A run of five wins, one draw and just one defeat in March gave them a chance of finishing in the top six. With five games to go they still had an opportunity but couldn’t take it. The fatal blow was defeat at fellow play-off contenders Oxford. Gillingham were 2-0 up with 17 minutes to go but ended up losing 3-2. Manager Steve Evans’ direct style of play was effective. Vadaine Oliver and John Akinde were handfuls up front while the Gills were always dangerous from set pieces. Captain Kyle Dempsey was a standout performer. The central midfielder, signed last summer, was an ever present and led by example. Oliver, also in his first season with the club, finished as top scorer with 18 goals. It remains to be seen what the summer brings for Gillingham. If they have the same manager and similar squad in place next season, expect another strong challenge for a play-off place. However, Evans’ future at the club is uncertain while Dempsey and Oliver among others are being linked with moves away. There is not much room to manoeuvre in the transfer market as they have one of the smallest budgets in the division.

Player of the Season: Kyle Dempsey
