Football Season Review

Champions: Sheffield United

Sheffield United are coming from an excellent season, as they managed to win the league relatively easily and end their six-year stay in League One. Over those six years, the Blades have had a number of disappointments and near misses, including two play-off defeats, one of which came on penalties in the final, but there was no need for them to search for promotion via the play-offs this time around, as they were head and shoulders above everyone in the league and secured their promotion with three games to spare. Their fans could have been forgotten for thinking that they would end up struggling once more following the month of August, which saw them collect only a point in four matches, but the opening month of the season was obviously a period of gelling and getting used to the ideas of their new manager Chris Wilder, as it was all plain sailing for them after that, as they lost only three games between the start of September and the end of the season, with two of those three defeats curiously coming against Walsall. Being a big club and having been in the Premier League just over a decade ago, the Blades' mid-term plan will now be to return to the promised land that is the top flight. Of course, they look rather unlikely to achieve that goal as early as next season, but they have a rather strong squad and reportedly also have resources to bring in new players, so they will not be expected to have anything to do with the drop next season.
