Football Season Review

№13: Charlton Athletic

Charlton entered the season hoping to bounce straight back into the Championship, but badly failed to deliver, as they were near the play-off places until midway through but then suffered a collapse and were even battling against the drop at one point. Russel Slade was given the tough task of making the Addics bounce back straight away but lasted only 16 games, losing his job in November, with Karl Robinson eventually taking over. The Addics were still pretty much inside the play-off race when Robinson took over, as they enjoyed a good spell of form between Slade's departure and Robinson's appointment, but the former MK Dons boss could not get the Addics to perform to their full potential, with the difficult injury situation that he had to deal with not helping him at all. The positives that Charlton can take out of the season are Ricky Holmes's form, as last summer signing was comfortably their best player, and the emergence of Ezri Ndoyo but, other than that, there was not much good regarding their season. Moreover, their fans protested against the club owners following Slade's departure, with Robinson becoming Charlton's seventh manager in under three years, and the club hierarchy's unwillingness to keep the managerial carousel spinning is likely the only reason while Robinson is still in the job. He will now have the summer to make the squad his own but will know that he will need to perform much better than he did this season.
