Football Season Review

№6: Millwall

Millwall are coming from a season that was a wild success, as they had an excellent FA Cup run, which saw them beat three Premier League sides before being crushed by Tottenham and, more importantly, win promotion following a play-off final win over Bradford. It would have been difficult to predict that the Lions would do so well from the evidence seen early in the season, as they were firmly inside the bottom half with one third of the season gone. However, Neil Harris has obviously done a great job of timing his side's form, as his Lions got better over time and did not even allow their FA Cup adventure to affect their league form. It started to look like they ran out of steam late in the season, as back-to-back defeats to Fleetwood and Oxford left them depending on results elsewhere to secure a play-off place, but they eventually managed to get over the line and finish the league part of the season as sixth, therefore grabbing the final play-off place just ahead of Southend. The play-off saw the Lions show their well-known ability to rise up when the going gets tough, as they disappointed in the first leg of their semi final against Scunthorpe but beat the Iron away from home to make the final and then scored late on to beat the Bantams and return to the Championship. Lee Gregory will need to address his side's inconsistency if his men are to compete in the second tier and increasing the depth of his squad is likely to be his first priority over the summer.
