Football Season Review

№17: Oldham Athletic

Oldham are coming from a rather bizarre season, which was close to being a carbon copy of their previous one, as they once again struggled for more than a half of the campaign and then appointed John Sheridan, who once again saw them easily escape the drop. The Latics were lead by Steve Robinson until mid January and the general consensus among their fans and other League One manager was that they were under performing, as they were playing some decent stuff but were constantly in and around the relegation zone due to their shocking inability to score at home, as they failed to find the net in seven out of nine league home games they played under Robinson. His position eventually became untenable and the board decided to act and bring in Sheridan, who guided them to safety a year earlier, only to leave them for Notts County, where he lasted only six months. Sheridan's return to the club had a mixed reaction among the fans, but the negative views soon disappeared, as Sheridan produced a remarkable upturn in the Latics' fortunes, as they suddenly became a formidable home side while also doing reasonably well on their travels, displaying upper mid table form in the second half of the season and going on to comfortably beat the drop. Sheridan has made it clear that he will be going nowhere this time around and the goal for next season, according to him, will be to challenge at the other end of the table, as Oldham will be looking to end their remarkable 22-year stay in the third tier.
