Football Season Review

№3: Scunthorpe United

Scunthorpe are coming from an exciting season that ultimately ended in disappointment, as they once again missed out on promotion after being beaten by Millwall in the play-off semi final. They entered the season with a lot of hope, given the excellent surge that they had following Graham Alexander's appointment last season, which saw them only narrowly miss out on a play-off place. The Iron carried the momentum into the new season, as they were beaten teams for fun during the autumn and spent a lot of the season leading the league, with winger Josh Morris in particular having a brilliant season, having lead the league in scoring until midway through the campaign. However, things started to turn sour for the Iron in February, as they finished that month without a single victory and ended up winning only two out of the twelve games they played in February and March. That run of form made it seem that they would end up winning on a play-off place, but they managed to steady the ship and finish the season with a good run of results, eventually finishing four points below second-placed Bolton. They did a good job against sixth-placed Millwall in the first leg of their play-off clash, but the Lions were too good in the return leg, beating the Iron with a 3:2 scoreline at home to reach Wembley. Despite the disappointing end to their campaign, Scunthorpe are definitely on an uptrend as a club and, if they keep hold of the core of their squad, will be pushing for promotion again next time around.
