Football Season Review

№18: Shrewsbury Town

Shrewsbury are coming from another season during which they managed to avoid the relegation only narrowly, as they once again had spells during which they played some decent stuff, but generally struggled due to their lack of quality in front of goal. Micky Mellon, who was already under pressure going into the season, oversaw his side win only twice in their opening twelve matches in the league, but left the club to join Tranmere just when the pressure on him started to mount. The Shrews eventually appointed Grimsby Town boss Paul Hurst as their new manager and, while their opening results under him were promising, they soon started to drop down to Earth and spent pretty much the entire season near the relegation places. The injury situation did not help either, with several important players missing large chunks of action and Abu Ogogo missing the majority of the second half of the season, but the Shrews eventually managed to pull through and escape the drop by two points. While the fact that they managed to escape the drop might seem underwhelming, it should be noted that the Shrews were now without Sullay Kaikai, who played a huge role in them staying up last time around and, from that perspective, their survival is a decent achievement. However, they are simply crying out for a player they can count on to score at least 10 league goals in a season and this is something that Hurst will be looking to address over the summer.
