Football Season Review

№11: Accrington Stanley

One of the clubs most adversely affected by the global Covid-19 pandemic were Accrington Stanley, who will feel like the season was a missed opportunity to claim a play-off place. With the stability provided by manager John Coleman and owner Andy Holt, they made a steady start to life in League 1 before being hit by Covid-19. The virus affected several members of the first team squad and back-room staff and they were unable to recover form on returning to action in the winter. They played just 16 league matches before the turn of the year and were unable to find any consistency as injuries continued to bite. They thrashed relegated Bristol Rovers 6-1 but were then thrashed 7-0 at promoted Peterborough United. Those results rather sum up their season. Colby Bishop and Dion Charles formed one of the most lethal strike partnerships in the division, bagging 32 goals, with Sean McConville enjoying another productive season despite being interrupted by injury. Seamus Connelly played an integral role in the middle of the park and his influence was missed the latter part of the season. Coleman has described this season as a step in the right direction, with his side evolving and improving. With hopes of returning to normality next season, a concerted play-off challenge looks to be well within their grasp.
