Football Season Review

№8: Clyde

In their first season back in League One, Clyde secured survival on the last day of the season thanks to a dramatic win over East Fife. That was their fourth victory in five games, accounting for 12 of the 20 points they won in the campaign. Certainly, Clyde had a knack of timing their run just right, having struggled for the duration of the campaign. Indeed, after the second week of the season, they would only finish one matchday higher than eighth. The problems that appeared evident when they arrived into this campaign proved true, namely that they would be reliant solely on David Goodwillie for goals. This proved to be the case for the early part of the season as they finished up before the shutdown with three wins from eight games. Interestingly, the victories they achieved came against some of the better teams in the league. Clyde, though, were not a team suited to sitting back and defending. Despite the acquisition of Tom Lang in the heart of the defence – he had a good season – they were weak at the back. They were not aided by a midfield that was much too easy to break through for much of the season – and indeed it was in this area that they were truly at their worst. A Hail Mary signing in the form of Kevin Nicoll actually proved effective, which was rather logic defying. Meanwhile, in the second half of the season, they added to their offensive threat by signing Lewis Jamieson from St Mirren, who took some of the weight off Goodwillie. Having survived this time around, though, Clyde should feel more confident about their prospects next season. The squad certainly needs added to, with all areas of the team needing upgrades if they are to achieve safety again.
