Football Season Review

Champions: Partick Thistle

Partick Thistle ultimately achieved their goal of automatic promotion to the Championship, but made hard work of the early part of the campaign before eventually finding their form after the lengthy January shutdown. As a full-time club, it was expected they would be a dominant force, particularly as they had an experienced side. Through 10 games, though, they had only four wins to their name, had lost three times and had drawn another three. It should be noted that they were struggling with chronic injury problems at that point, although they should have been achieving much more. In hindsight, the shutdown came at the perfect time for them. When play returned, they equipped themselves well, while their competitive advantage of having full-time training also made a dramatic difference. However, they also recruited very well. January signings Steven Bell and Scott Tiffoney proved to be stars in the second half of the season, with Bell plugging a gap in the defence that had previously been filled by midfielder Sena Niang. Tiffoney, though, proved to be their ace. He lifted some of the pressure from Brian Graham and proved to be the creative start that they had previously been missing. He was aided, of course, by Zak Rudden finally finding both his fitness and range in front of goal. Having eliminated the problem of being easy to defend against, Partick strung together a succession of victories and charged from a team that was threatening to miss out on the playoffs entirely, to worth champions. It will not be considered a great season for Partick by any means, by they have accomplished their goal of bouncing back at the first time of asking.
