Football Season Review

№14: Excel Mouscron

Mouscron were universally expected to be the pushovers of the league from early on as they had the look of a hastily-assembled squad without clear vision and any discernible quality. Yet Mircea Rednic somehow managed to get them up and running early on and three wins in the opening four games suddenly made the Reds look like a proper team. They even stunned early pace-setters Club Brugge with a home win in September and were among the leading sides in the first couple of months of the season. Omar Govea was catching the eye as an attacking midfielder who was playing with swagger and confidence, and had an eye for goal, while the battering ram Taiwo Awoniyi was proving a menace up front as well. Mouscron were never really likely to keep the pace though and soon the defeats started to pile. They went on a run of eight games without a league win and dropped to lower mid-table by December but two important wins just before the winter break against Zulte-Waregem and Oostende stopped the rot and maintained the cushion to the bottom places. The deficiencies in midfield and defence began to look more and more pronounced as the season went on and Mouscron managed to win only against bottom side Mechelen until the end of the regular season. Yet they continued to stay afloat due to the points generated early on and finished the campaign just three points ahead of the bottom two. Rednic was sacked a few weeks before the end of the regular season and Frank Dafys finished the season. Mouscron actually had a good start in the play-offs with two wins in a row but they were woeful for the rest of the campaign, losing heavily in most of their games. Thus, it is another season in which the main objective of survival was secured, but only just, as the worst team in the league in recent seasons stayed by the skin of their teeth after a strong start. It will be another summer of wholesale squad changes for a club that really has little purpose in their existence.
