Football Season Review

№5: Luzern

Luzern have established themselves as a solid top five Super League club over the recent years, but will hardly be content with the season they have had, especially as their second half of the campaign has been truly abysmal. Much like Sion, who finished just above them, the Blues have done well in the first half of the season and even had outside hopes for a second-place finish, only for things to completely fall apart after the winter break. They managed to win only five of their eighteen games in the second half of the season, with two of those victories coming in the last three rounds, with their top three hopes either virtually or mathematically over. It is difficult to pinpoint exactly what went wrong for Markus Babbel and his men, given that they had a squad of decent quality and that they did not really have a turbulent campaign, with Babbel being at the club for more than two full seasons already and for seemingly everything being in place for them to challenge. What is worrying for the Blues now is that they have absolutely no momentum and that they would have been battling against the drop if only points obtained in the spring season counted. They obviously have no momentum whatsoever going into the new season and the summer will be the time for some difficult decisions to be made - the board first need to make a decision regarding Babbel's future and, if the German manager does stay in charge, significant summer changes to their squad are to be expected.
