Fortuna Sittard ended season 2020-2021 in 11th position, a great achievement for two reasons: firstly, because the past season, at the time of the league's suspension due to Covid-19 pandemic, they were in third last position, clearly inside the relegation zone. Secondly, because after 10 rounds they were in last position with only 3 points and not a single victory.
Sittarders had started the season with Kevin Hofland, who had taken over from Sjors Ultee, on the bench...it was a complete disaster, the team seemed in total confusion. After 10 rounds, the club decided to recall Ultee, certainly the best decision. Rarely have we seen a coach able to be so decisive from the start. The first victory came immediately and then others followed, so many that led Fortuna not only out of the relegation zone, but to fight for a spot in the playoffs, which they would also have achieved if they hadn't just collected a point in the last 3 games.
Fortuna's experience in KNVB Beker was very short, they eliminated second tiers Roda in the first round, but in the second they lost to other second tiers NEC Nijmegen.
With regards to single players, the season of English left-back George Cox was excellent, always a threat on the left wing, he also scored 5 goals and provided 5 assists. The young coach never made changes to his midfield as Tekie, Rienstra and Flemming have always guaranteed constant and positive performance. The latter was also their top scorer with 12 goals. Fortuna had problems between the posts as regular goalkeeper Coselev, whose performance had been negative, left the team in the winter market, and Van Osch, positive his performance, was missing for a month due to an injury as well as other goalkeeper Velthuizen. In attack Semedo and Polter scored 9 goals each, but much more was expected from the second one.
