Second consecutive double for Ajax (considering that last season was not finished due to the pandemic), who won their 35th national title and the 20th KNVB Beker. They literally dominated Eredivisie with 28 victories out of 34 matches and just 2 defeats that came in the first part of the season (against Twente and Groningen, two middle table teams), while their 2021 was almost perfect, 3 draws and 17 wins. Moreover, Godenzonen displayed by far the best attack with 102 goals scored, and the best defense, with only 23 goals conceded.
In KNVB Cup Ajax won all five games played. They eliminated Utrecht, AZ Alkmaar, PSV Eindhoven and Heerenveen, defeating 2-1 Vitesse in the final.
The sore points of this season, on the other hand, came from the European campaign. The team of Erik Ten Hag did not go through the Champions League group stage, finishing third behind Liverpool and Atalanta, and thus qualifying for Europa League's round of 32. Here too things did not go particularly well, after easily eliminating Lille (future champions of France!) and Young Boys, they had to surrender to Roma in the quarter-finals.
As for individual players, newcomers did quite well, in particular Davy Klaassen, who also scored 16 goals, Antony, from whom, however, a contribution of more than 10 goals was expected and Sebastien Haller who, arrived in January, scored 13 goals, but was unable to be deployed in the Europa League due to an administration mishap. A heavy absence was that of goalkeeper Andrè Onana, who in February was suspended by UEFA for one year for violating doping rules. The season of 18-year-old Ryan Gravenberch was excellent, as was that of Argentine central defender Lisandro Martinez. Below expectations that of David Neres and Noussair Mazraoui, also due to the many injuries.
