Football Season Review

№11: Genoa

It seemed almost inevitable that Genoa would suffer a hangover after what took place at the end of last season. Gian Piero Gasperini had masterminded a terrific campaign where the club finished in 6th place but they were then denied a UEFA license to compete in Europe - a spot they relinquished to bitter rivals Sampdoria. To make matters worse, key players from last season's successful side left for pastures new. Diego Perotti and Iago Falque both joined Roma whilst Mbaye Niang returned to parent club Milan, taking Andrea Bertolacci and Juraj Kucka with him. The effects of those departures were immediately felt as the Grifone lost four of their opening five games in Serie A. All in all, it was a pretty abject first half of the season and six consecutive defeats around the turn of the year - including an embarrassing cup exit to Alessandria and a loss to rivals Sampdoria left many wondering if Gasperini would remain in the job. However, the January transfer window provided a much needed chance for the manager to work his magic. He was able to bring in talented forgotten men like Alessio Cerci and Suso who both added some much needed flair to the side. The young Spaniard in particular was a massive hit and scored one of the best hat-tricks seen anywhere in Europe against Frosinone. Gasperini managed to salvage Genoa's season and stave off fears of relegation, eventually ending up comfortably in mid-table. The problem will again be whether he is able to hold onto key players or be given the needed funds to rebuild the team.
