Football Season Review

№10: Haugesund

Haugesund started the season with a new coach in Erik Hornerland, who had to maintain the high start from last season, when the Arabs secured a European finish against expectations. He initially got off to a mixed start as some exciting performances were followed by a few rather feeble ones. The search for a settled starting 11 remained an ongoing process and the constant changes did not seem to have a good effect on the tea. But following a poor run of just one win in eight games in the early summer, Haugesund began to find their feet and find some good momentum. They claimed the scalp of Rosenborg at home and developed one of the best and most assured defensive units in the lead. Fredrik Pallesen Knudsen emerged as a real jewel at the back while Liban Abdi came up with the odd bit of magic and trickery down the wings as well. The team enjoyed an exciting Europa League run but eventually fell at the hands of Lech Poznan despite being at one point 2:0 up in the first leg at home. The team suffered a blow mid-season as midfield pairing of Filip Kiss and Haris Hajradanovic, both vital for the team's style of play, departed for new challenges and left Hornerland chasing new players to fill the gaps. He did bring in some decent replacements but, even if results remained pretty good, the squad seemed unprepared to last the campaign due to the lack of depth. A battle for the top four remained alive until October but then Haugesund really dropped the ball in terms of form. They finished the season with seven losses from the last eight games, barely putting adequate effort and losing their defensive shape in the last few games of the season. It made it feel like a pretty poor season at the end but Hornerland did a pretty decent job with one of the smallest squad and a place in mid-table is pretty good finish for a club of that size.
