Football Season Review

№9: Stabæk

Stabæk started the season determined to avoid the sort of drama that nearly saw them relegated at the end of the previous campaign. Toni Ordinas now had the opportunity to construct his own squad and he appeared eager and ready from the start to give a platform to the talented youngsters in the squad, while using a few experienced players to nurture them as well. The team from the outskirts of Oslo enjoyed a very promising start of the season as four wins in the opening five games established them as one of the early leaders. It soon became clear the striker Ohi Omoijuanfo was ready to blossom after giving hints of his potential the year before. The powerful forward started the season in blistering form and his displays gave the whole side a platform and confidence to build on. Toni Brochmann was looking like a very good addition in midfield while youth product Hugo Veteran quickly settled in and started to impress too. Stabæk remained one of the more impressive and overachieving sides in the league despite the odd blip and indeed they lost just twice in the first ten games. The lack of depth in the squad and a bit if inexperience eventually put paid to this fantastic start, with four losses on the spin in June. But Ordinas did not lose the faith and his side maintained a good level of displays. They failed to sustain a challenge for Europe until the end but Omoijuanfo remained a constant provider of goals and finished second to Bendtner in the goalscoring charts at the end of the season. The likes of Ronald Hernandez, a summer addition from Venezuela, and John You Sæter provided a bit of depth in the squad and the team pulled off good wins over Molde and local rivals Vålerenga in front of their fans. Mid-table safety was the order of the day for them and it certainly suited the fans fine after the struggles a year ago. Overall, Ordinas can look back on a job well done as his team has made major strides in the right direction over the last 12 months and look ready for bigger things next season.
