After a dreadful start to life in a lower division, Inverness almost hauled themselves into the play-offs, but ultimately failed on the final day of the season. They finished on a run of 11 games undefeated, but were pipped for 4th place by Dunfermline.
This was a remarkable turnaround considering they only managed one win in the opening quarter of fixtures. They became harder to beat in the second quarter, but wins were still rare and the threat of consecutive relegations was present. With a succession of postponed games and more defeats in early 2018 the picture was gloomy for them.
However, winning the IRN-BRU Cup in March with a 1-0 win against Dumbarton changed their fortunes. An exciting run of eight wins and two draws saw them climb the table, but just too late to overhaul Dunfermline.
Inverness were beset with injuries at the start of the season and it showed in their results as they tried to adapt to life in the Championship. Finances were stretched and quality players such as David Raven and Owain Fon Williams were allowed to leave.
Fortunately, Inverness still had a Premier League-standard midfield duo of Iain Vigurs and Liam Polworth. Vigurs in particular was their driving force, although his discipline was lacking at times.
Operating with a small squad, Inverness struggled to recruit fresh talent in the winter transfer window. Striker, Nathan Austin, was acquired from Falkirk, but injuries limited his game time. Ultimately their season ended in failure, but hopes are high they can mount a serious challenge next season despite financial difficulties.
