Football Season Review

№12: Levante

Levante spent almost the entire 2019/20 campaign in mid-table and, unsurprisingly, that’s where they finished. From the fifth matchday to the final matchday they were somewhere between 9th and 13th, even spending the final eight matchdays exactly in 12th without moving. Even if the squad hadn’t changed that much, Levante coach Paco Lopez made his team a bit more solid defensively and a little less freewheeling in attack. They scored 12 goals fewer than they did last season, but they conceded 13 goals fewer too. Jose Luis Morales didn’t have his best season and that partly explains the drop-off in scoring form, while goalkeeper Aitor Fernandez was really good and that partly explains the better defensive numbers. But really the difference between Levante in 2018/19 and Levante in 2019/20 was a tactical one. They did a good job and even coped well with the fact that they had to play their home matches in the final six weeks of the season away from their normal home stadium, since construction work was taking place there. They instead played 100km away in Alicante, but it didn’t seem to affect them much. Levante have a good thing going with Paco Lopez and won’t be looking to change too much ahead of next season. Some players will go and some others will come, because there is always a bit of turnover at a club this size, but generally Levante will be looking to run it back if they can.
