It’s always especially difficult for the newly promoted side that comes up through the play-offs as they have so little time to prepare. And so it proved with Real Mallorca, who came up through the play-offs only to go straight back down.
From early on it was clear that the squad they’d built wasn’t the best. It was very sparse in certain positions and overloaded in others, while it also just lacked a certain level of talent. Yet, they had a good coach in Vicente Moreno and got on with it.
When summing up Real Mallorca’s season, there’s a clear reason why they got relegated. Their away form simply wasn’t good enough. They had the worst away form with just six points collected on the road all season. At home they had the 14th best form and 27 points, but that wasn’t enough when combined with their struggles on their travels.
Beating Real Madrid was a highlight, a win that of course came at home. And the emergence of Takefusa Kubo in the second half of the season was fun to watch. But, Real Mallorca just weren’t good enough and finished exactly where their 19th-ranked budget suggested they would – in 19th.
Now, they’ll plan to come back up, but may have to do so without Moreno as he has been linked with an exit. They’ll also lose a lot of their loan players, so it’s time for a bit of a rebuild.
