Football Season Review

№12: Portimonense SC

Algarvios had perhaps the strongest squad in talent apart from the top-4 teams in the country. Unfortunately, they were never able to get them all playing together at the same time, due to transfer market demands, injuries and moments of form. All members of the club, from players to staff and board, were happy to get a safety spot a few weeks before the end. However, when we look at the individual talent that played in this team, at some point, it’s a wonder how a 12th place can feel so satisfying. With an exciting Nakajima calling the shots in the beginning of the season, the return of talented Paulinho, the surprise adding of world renowned Jackson and the promising Tabata in attack, Portimonense should be more than just relegation runners. However, many physical problems on the Colombian, the departure of the Japanese in January together with Ewerton and Manafá, and the evident short number of second line options limited the potential of the team. Still, there were some brilliant moments, even if with irregular appearance. Clear home wins over Benfica and Sporting, and an impressive first half at Estádio da Luz, were just a small demonstration of the power this team could have had in other circumstances. Sadly, it is almost guaranteed that a big chunk of the current talent will follow the steps of Manafá and Nakajima, and Alvinegros will hardly be able to rebuild such an impressive collection of skillful players next season.
