Anderlecht finished only third at the end of last season. This wasn’t a great achievement for the biggest club in Belgium but the lack of consistency and the lack of depth in defence proved costly. Purple and Whites had only 4 typical centre-backs all season and on numerous occasions only 1 of those was available. This happened a lot during the play-offs when Anderlecht were nothing more than average – 4 wins, 2 draws and 4 defeats. Things in terms of depth in defence have only worsened this summer. The main goalkeeper Schmeichel, the impressive main left-back Augustinsson and duo of centre-backs left the team. Anderlecht are yet to make any new signings so they might enter the early rounds of the campaign with only 2 natural centre-backs – captain Vertonghen and N’Diaye. Also, it seems that the back-up goalie Coosemans might be starting in the first few rounds. Coach Riemer remains calm. He insists that within weeks 4-5 new players will be signed. However, at the moment of writing Anderlecht parted ways with 4 regulars and are yet to make a new signing. In midfield and attack the squad remains largely the same for now. Youngsters Angulo and Vazquez were impactful subs last term and even more contributions are expected from them this season. One of the big stars of the team Yari Verschaeren missed most of last season injured. He’s hoping to be fully fit now and with him available Anderlecht can expect to be one of the highest scoring teams in the league. Obviously, the lack of defensive options and on goal need to be addressed. If coach Riemer is right and soon quality new signings are made Anderlecht will certainly be among the serious title-contenders once more.

Target

The big goal is to win the title. It will be hard but should be in contention.
