One of Japan's biggest footballing institutions were naturally displeased at finishing 9th last season, and only making the semi-finals of the Emperor Cup, although they are still in the Asian Champions League. They scored more than enough goals to win the J-League but were really poor in defence, conceding so many goals that only the teams to get relegated(!) conceded more. Something had to give, and as always that was the manager. Therefore, Steve Holland is the new manager, assisted by Patrick Kisnorbo. Their biggest task was to improve an atrocious defence; their attack was basically fine as it is. They were even content to let Nishimura leave without kicking up a fuss, such was (and is) the strength of their Brazilian contingent. Both CBs - Eduardo & Kamjima - moved on, as did CDM Koike. They also weren't happy with regular GK Popp, although he is still at the club competing for his place with Il-kyu Park. Popp should have the edge but is certainly under pressure to improve. Kimura is expected to replace Koike and challenge Watanbe for a role alongside Captain Kita, and Deng/ Quinones are expected to replace their departed CBs. Perhaps more crucially, they're hoping that Daiya Tono plays the link-up role with more consistency than the departed Nishimura, or even gets forward to make a two up front on occasion. Based on last season's performances, it's an astute acquisition for them. A lot of rotation players moved on too but that's only natural for a big club, and none will be missed as they've helped facilitate the signing of better personnel. They'll naturally want to win the title this season but have to be expecting a slow start with a CB overhaul and change of manager. They're not the most patient of clubs but it's unrealistic to expect this team to win games easily at the start. They're still one of the most lethal attacking teams in Japan but only time will tell if their defensive gambles pay off. Must at least make the top 4 this season though.
