Admira had very difficult campaign and they were lucky to avoid finishing last. The lack of serious transfer activity last summer clearly hinted that Admira would be struggling and 7 defeats in the first 9 rounds (W1 D1) quickly put them in serious trouble.
Not scoring enough goals while being all over the place defensively left not much hope for Admira and come the winter break they were in last place so desperate signings of new players started. Several free agents and a few players on loan were added quickly.
Not much improvement in the displays was witnessed though and Admira won just 1 of their first 10 games in 2021 (D4 L5) so they entered the play-offs in last place. The fact that solid inner midfielder Tomic broke his ankle in late January also hurt the team and this gave instrumental Kerschbaum even more responsibilities as he had to carry the entire burden of the midfield on his shoulders with only inexperienced youngsters around him to help.
The survival hope was resurrected early in the play-offs when crucial 1:0 away wins were achieved both against St. Polten and Altach to lift Admira off last place. Still after only 5 play-off rounds coach Buric was sacked and for the final 5 games Schmidt came in to secure survival. The interim coach managed to deliver 3 consecutive clean sheets in his first 3 games in the charge and the points accumulated by those proved just about enough for Admira staying in the top flight.
Schmidt refused to commit long-term so the coming summer is expected to be difficult for Admira. Not only they need to find new permanent manager, but also more than half of the players are running out of contracts and this hints at major personnel overhaul taking place too.
