Football Season Review

Champions: Red Bull Salzburg

Salzburg have been rulers supreme of Austrian football for the better part of the last decade-plus, and it was more of the usual for the Red Bulls, who once again won the domestic title and also managed to win back the domestic cup, after losing the final to Sturm last season. Their big goal going into this season was to finally reach the group stage of the Champions League, but they once again found a way to fail to achieve that goal. This time, they were beaten on away goals by Red Star Belgrade after drawing the away leg 0:0 and leading 2:0 in the home leg in which they had by far the better of things. They therefore once again had to settle for a place in the Europa League, where they won the group with six wins in six and won their first knock-out game, but were edged out by Napoli in the next knock-out round. The excellent work done by Marco Rose got him offers from abroad and it was announced in April that he will be leaving the club in the summer to take over at Borussia Monchengladbach. The good work for the Red Bulls is that Austria's improved UEFA coefficient and the fact that four English teams play each other in the finals of the European cups means that Austria will have a Champions League group stage place next season, so Salzburg will finally play in Europe's elite competition. They should have no trouble continuing their domestic dominance despite Rose's departure but will obviously want to once again make their mark on Europe.
