Mattersburg generally did well under Gerald Baumgartner but endured a poor start to the season and parted ways with the manager in late August, with their early form seeing them win only once in six and suffering a humiliating 6:0 home defeat in the hands of Wolfsberger.
The decision to part ways with Baumgartner was seen as harsh by the majority of the media and fans alike, but the club opted to replace him with former Altach manager Klaus Schmidt.
The Burgerlanders did improve on their poor start under Schmidt and looked in contention to reach the Championship group at times, but eventually ended up in the Relegation Group, where they finished second, therefore qualifying for the Europa League Play-offs.
Their Play-off semi final was a one-legged clash away at Rapid, which they lost 2:0, therefore missing out on an opportunity to qualify for Europe.
While disappointed to have their season ended in the way it was, Mattersburg do not have a large budget and have to be pleased for as long as they stay far enough from trouble, which is what they managed to do this season.
