Wacker Innsbruck's Bundesliga stay is over after only one year, as they were edged out by Hartberg in the race to avoid the drop.
The Innsbruckers looked like relegation-fodder pretty much throughout the campaign and the only reason why they did not spend the entire season at the bottom of the table is that Admira were shockingly bad in the autumn season.
They recorded two wins and seven defeats in their opening nine games, while the sole truly decent spell of form that they had was in October and early November, when they went five games without defeat.
With their form never really improving and sides around them getting better, they had two managerial changes over the course of the campaign, but none really yielded the expected results, as the Innsbruckers kept struggling.
They entered the final month of the season in a four-horse race to avoid the drop that also included Altach, Admira and Hartberg. It was between them and Hartberg going into the final round but, despite a convincing win over Mattersburg, they were relegated.
Wacker have really not showed anything that would suggest that relegation was harsh on them. Their squad was simply not good enough for the top flight and they now face the tough task of trying to bounce straight up.
